LEAPing into new experiences

When London arrived at Girls LEAP Camp, she probably didn't expect to leave knowing how to sew.

By the end of the week, the fifth grader proudly shared, "I can use a back stitch to sew my own things now." It's a simple statement, but it represents something much bigger—a young person discovering she is capable of learning a new skill and creating something with her own hands.

Because of generous supporters of The Hous Foundation’s Activity Scholarship Program, five girls attended Girls LEAP Camp this summer. Throughout the week, campers explored STEM, creative design, and sustainability. Creating their own personal brand was an activity that spanned the entire week, which led to increased self-awareness and confidence. The girls also worked together to create a choreographed dance presentation for their final day.

Every camper's experience was different, but they all came away with new skills, new perspectives, and a greater belief in themselves. Dr. Gaby Edon of Girls LEAP shares some comments from this year’s campers.

What They Loved

The girls found joy in many different activities, each discovering something that sparked their curiosity.

• Makayla (5th grade): "Making the hats, because it was fun and interesting."

• Stacy (11th grade): "The best part of my week at camp was doing the art projects when we got to be creative."

• Caelyn (7th grade): "STEM was my favorite because it was fun doing the projects."

What They Learned

Camp challenged the girls to think creatively and see the world in new ways.

• Ernaline (12th grade): "One new thing I learned this week was about polyester and its dangers to the human body."

• Abena (7th grade): "Dyes from our clothes seep into waterways."

• Noa (6th grade): "I figured out how to sew."

What They'll Take With Them

The lessons didn't end when camp did.

• Rachel (12th grade): "I learned how to make my own perfume from scratch."

• London (5th grade): "I can use a back stitch to sew my own things now."

Every new skill mastered, every project completed, and every spark of curiosity helps shape a young person's future. Opportunities like Girls LEAP Camp allow children to discover interests they might never have explored otherwise.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, five young women were able to experience a week of learning, creativity, and personal growth.
